Theft from the person - update

    Wedi'i roi 17 Mehefin 2025

    Camau a gymerwyd:

From March - May 2025 we saw a marked increase in theft from the person offences where elderly victims were being targeted for cash an other personal items. We have done a range of work around this, most notably tracking down a female who was wanted for a number of offences and getting her charged (officers from Dudley need to be given the credit for this). A male was also arrested and charged for an offence.

We have had plain clothed officers in the city centre at key times (usually around Queen Square and Lichfield Street) and we have also been in local banks sharing information with customers who may be vulnerable to being targeted.

For now these offences have reduced meaning there are less victims of this crime. We had officers from different departments offering to step-up patrols due to the type of offence and impact it has on the victims.

    Anti-social behaviour

    Wedi'i roi 17 Mehefin 2025

    Camau a gymerwyd:

We have set ASB as a priority for the city centre teams for the last few months as a result of feedback from local meetings, conversations with businesses and members of the public. I have just attended a partnership meeting where we looked at our progress around this. As the warmer weather sets in, we know this can be challenging. Based on current information and reports from the public our key patrol areas this month are Queens Square, St Peter's Gardens and Dudley Street. We are in regular contact with the ASB Team to offer support and reduce the incidents of behaviours that make people feel unsafe when they come into the city. There are civil powers we are able to use to help if the offer of pathways of support are not effective.

Uniformed officers from the city centre teams are busy responding to calls and investigating crimes - this week we have arrested people for recall to prison, shoplifting, a fail to appear warrant and a public order offence. We have also held community events at the library and Wulfrun Centre so that members of the public can speak to officers in person. Officers are progressing investigations into a range of crimes, assisting CID with their enquiries and interviewing suspects

We know we have key locations within the city where anti-social behaviour is more likely to occur. Our incident logs provide data to direct our patrols so we are in the right places at the right time. A Public Space Protection Order has been granted for the city centre to provide a long term approach to reducing incidents of anti-social behaviour that is committed by groups of people. Residents, visitors and businesses can enjoy a safer space without fear of confrontation.

Report anti-social behaviour so we are aware and can target our patrols. We are aware the locations can change where anti-social behaviour happens and this can depend on the time of year.

    Burglary business - update

    Wedi'i roi 17 Mehefin 2025

    Camau a gymerwyd:

Over the last couple of months we have been responding to an increase in burglary offences - these relate to business premises as opposed to houses. The crimes have been taking place overnight in the city centre and it is usually shops and pubs that have been targeted.

Back in early June, our CID teams identified an offender and he was arrested. In the course of the arrest (for another offence) he assaulted a police officer but he managed to keep hold of him and he was brought into custody. He was charged with burglaries, thefts and assaulting the officer and sentenced to 20 weeks in prison. We have also arrested another individual for burglary but this is not part of the same trend. We are utilising some other tactics and this is helping us reduce the frequency of the crimes.

These crimes effect businesses in a number of ways, not just stolen property but broken windows, damaged door and disruption to business hours.

    A safe city centre

    Wedi'i roi 17 Mehefin 2025

    Camau a gymerwyd:

This is an overarching priority for the city centre officers where we look to make the city feel a safe place to live, work and visit. Whilst we will always have priorities in policing - such as responding to emergency calls as quickly as possible, investigating crimes effectively and reducing public place violence (a few examples) and the city teams deal with a range of incidents and issues encountered by members of the public.

Our aim is to make the city feel safe - this can differ from the amount of crime that is reported to us.

Staff are out on foot and in vehicles, working alongside our response teams and a range of partners. We coordinate our approach so we can try and solve problems and reduce crime and disorder.

Last weekend some of our teams worked the Pride event and walked in the parade. This event passed safely and was enjoyed by many.; This is an example of when we work hard to create a safe environment in the city centre as the event takes place.
