    Priority:
To proactively reduce and prevent rural crime across Somerton and surrounding communities through targeted enforcement, community engagement, and partnership working.Statement:
Somerton Neighbourhood Policing Team is committed to protecting our rural communities from the impact of crime. We recognise the unique challenges faced by those living and working in rural areas, including theft of agricultural machinery, livestock offences, wildlife crime, and heritage crime. These offences not only cause financial loss but also undermine community confidence and safety.

    Our approach will focus on:

    • Visible Policing: Increasing patrols in rural hotspots and engaging with local residents and landowners to build trust and gather intelligence.
    • Partnerships: Working closely with local councils, farming groups, and national bodies such as the NFU and Crimestoppers to share information and coordinate responses.
    • Prevention and Education: Promoting crime prevention advice, encouraging reporting, and supporting initiatives such as Farm Watch and Horse Watch.
    • Targeted Enforcement: Using intelligence-led operations to disrupt criminal networks and bring offenders to justice.

We will continue to listen to our communities and adapt our strategies to ensure Somerton remains a safe and resilient place to live and work.

Seasonal Update – Spring Focus on Wildlife and Livestock Offences

As springtime has fully arrived, Somerton Neighbourhood Policing Team will be paying particular attention to wildlife and livestock offences across Somerton and surrounding rural communities.
This is a critical time of year when wildlife is nesting and livestock are giving birth, making animals and rural land especially vulnerable to harm, disturbance, and criminal activity. Offences such as hare coursing, illegal hunting, theft or worrying of livestock, damage to nests or habitats, and unauthorised access to farmland can have devastating consequences for farmers, landowners, and wildlife.
    In response, we will be:

Increasing patrols in rural and agricultural areas, particularly during early mornings and evenings.
Actively monitoring known hotspots for wildlife and livestock-related offences.
Working closely with farmers, landowners, gamekeepers, and rural partners to identify risks and share intelligence.
Encouraging the public to report suspicious behaviour promptly, helping us act quickly and effectively.

This seasonal focus complements our wider commitment to proactively reducing and preventing rural crime. By protecting wildlife and livestock during this vulnerable period, we aim to safeguard animal welfare, support those who live and work in rural areas, and preserve the natural environment that is so important to our communities.
We continue to encourage residents to remain vigilant, report concerns, and engage with initiatives such as Farm Watch and Horse Watch, as we work together to keep Somerton’s countryside safe and resilient.

  • Blaenoriaeth:

One of our neighbourhood priorities is to keep people safe online. We are focusing on protecting vulnerable people from fraud and exploitation. Criminals often target individuals through emails, social media and online marketplaces, and these scams can have a serious impact on victims.

We will work with local partners to raise awareness of common online scams and offer advice on how to stay safe. We will also support victims and encourage anyone with concerns to contact us using our team’s contact form or by calling 101. If you have any information that may help us, please get in touch.

Working with Local Schools to Keep Young People Safe Online

As part of our ongoing neighbourhood priority to keep people safe online, we have been working closely with local schools to raise awareness of the risks young people can face in the digital world. These sessions focus on helping children and young people understand the dangers of online fraud, grooming, exploitation and harmful content, as well as how criminals may use social media, gaming platforms and messaging apps to target them.
By working in partnership with schools and other local organisations, we are supporting students to recognise suspicious behaviour, protect their personal information and know where to seek help if something does not feel right. We are also providing advice for parents and carers on how to have open conversations about online safety at home.
Protecting vulnerable people remains a key focus for our team. If you, your child, or someone you know has concerns about online activity or may have been affected by an online incident, please contact us using our team’s contact form or by calling 101. If you have information that may help us, we encourage you to get in touch.
