    Operation Downsway

    Our yearly campaign to address community concerns around road and driving related offences that fall into the fatal 5 driving offences.

    Action taken:

    •Extra patrols, educational and enforcement activities across the district focused on targeting excess speed, distracted driving, as well as drink/drug driving.

    •A number of police and partner deployments across the town in the last few months to tackle ASB driving, including excess speeding, these have led to a number of positive stops and vehicle seizures, details of which have been added to our Sussex Police website, and posted to our Lewes Police Facebook page.

    •Addressing issued of ASB driving associated with the use of EScooters in areas of the coast, recently including a day of action along the coast resulting in a number of EScooter seizures, details of days of actions have been published to our Lewes Police Facebook page.

  • Priority:

    Anti-social behaviour (ASB), and ASB driving.

    Swiftly responding to incidents of ASB and effectively using policing powers available to intervene - including powers of dispersal where the actions of individuals or groups impact their wider surroundings; which can lead to wider harm, including the misuse of public spaces or buildings, criminal damage or vandalism, for example graffiti or damage to public buildings, including ASB associated with driving offences; excess speed and noise.

    Action taken:

    •Neighbourhood Youth Officers continue to get into schools to engage with youngsters at key stages of devolvement to discuss ASB, low level crime and the effects actions can have on communities.

    •Additional patrols of open green spaces and parks in the area, with officers activity engaging with youngsters and encouraging them into local groups or sports events in the town as an alternative to causing ASB in the area.

    •A number of police and partner deployments across the town in the last few months to tackle ASB driving, including excess speeding, these have led to a number of positive stops and vehicle seizures, details of which have been added to our Sussex Police website, and posted to our Lewes Police Facebook page.
