About us

About us

Local policing teams are groups of officers dedicated to serving the community. Teams are made up of officers based in the area, supported by additional officers from the wider area.

Teams work closely with local authorities, organisations, partners and residents to decide policing priorities. This helps teams find long-term solutions to local problems.

Policing priorities

  • Priority:

    Action taken:

  • Priority:

    Aggressive Begging

    Issued 01 June 2026

    Action taken:

We are aware of concerns regarding aggressive begging in the Old Town and are taking firm, proactive steps to address the issue.

Our daily patrols in the area are having a positive impact, allowing officers to engage directly with individuals involved in aggressive begging. Where necessary, we are challenging this behaviour and taking robust enforcement action when individuals fail to comply.

We want to reassure the public that no one should feel intimidated or pressured while visiting or moving through the Old Town. Our officers are committed to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.

At the same time, we are working closely with partner agencies to ensure that those in genuine need are offered the appropriate support and access to services. Our approach balances enforcement with compassion, aiming to protect the public while supporting vulnerable individuals.

    Actioned 28 September 2026

  • Priority:

    Street Drinking

    Issued 01 June 2026

    Action taken:

We are aware of concerns regarding street drinking in the Old Town and are taking a zero-tolerance approach to this behaviour.

Street drinking is not acceptable in this area, and officers are actively enforcing the conditions of the Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to ensure public spaces remain safe and welcoming for everyone. Alcohol will be confiscated where necessary, and enforcement action will be taken against those who fail to comply.

We are committed to maintaining a safe environment for residents, businesses, and visitors, and we will continue to take firm and proportionate action to address street drinking and associated anti-social behaviour.

    Actioned 28 September 2026
