Officers have seized a further 55 illegal e-bikes and scooters during a recent deployment in Cardiff.
On Sunday 25 and Friday 30 January, officers in Cardiff were deployed across the city centre, Ely, Fairwater, Cathays and Roath as part of a local initiative targeting illegal and dangerously ridden e-bikes and off-road vehicles in our towns.
Rolling out after a briefing at Cardiff Central, the local Neighbourhood Policing Team was supported by colleagues from Cardiff Council and Home Immigration Enforcement to patrol across different areas of the city to check the vehicles, educate drivers and if needed, seize the vehicle.
A total of 55 e-bikes and e-scooters were seized during the deployment. Some of which were tested and shown to reach speeds in excess of 80mph.
This operation goes beyond simply riding these vehicles illegally. Officers also made three arrests for Possession with Intent to Supply Class B (Cannabis) and Home Office Immigration Enforcement had a successful deployment with 3 arrests, all bailed and reported for breach of bail and working illegally in the UK.
    Inspector Tim Ursell said:
"These are great results that will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the members of local communities whose lives are continually disrupted by the dangerous and anti-social riding of off-road and illegal road vehicles.
"Combating anti-social behaviour is a key pillar of the Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee with this op showing our continued commitment in Cardiff to tackling this issue."

    Issued 01 September 2025

    Action taken:

More than 60 illegal e-bikes and e-scooters have been seized in one day across #Cardiff and #Barry making the streets safer.
Among them was a modified mountain bike capable of reaching 90 miles per hour – the fastest ever that has been seized in a joint operation between South Wales Police and Cardiff Council
This bike was one of 11 seized in #Ely and #Fairwater

In total 62 illegal mechanically propelled vehicles (MPVs) also known as illegal e-bikes and scooters were seized.
They will now be crushed and recycled.

Inspector Tim Ursell Neighbourhood Manager for Fairwater/Canton & Ely said: "Unlawful use of e-bikes and e-scooters is not only illegal but also puts pedestrians and road users at serious risk.
"The impact of anti-social e-bike riders on the communities is regularly raised as a concern.
"Generally, the people we stop are oblivious to the law. They are typically delivery drivers, commuters looking for cheap travel or young people who see it as a trend.
"We urge the public to please understand the law and make safe, legal choices.

This operation follows a successful summer operation which resulted in 135 MPVs being seized.
