Policing priorities

  • Priority:

    Action taken:

  • Priority:

Concerns about antisocial behaviour and visible harm across the Colchester district, with particular focus on key hotspot locations including Stanway and Colchester City Centre. This includes retail areas and public spaces such as Castle Park, where high footfall, shoplifting and associated violence are concentrated.

    Issued 02 July 2026

    Action taken:

We’ve been listening to residents, businesses and visitors and understand the impact anti-social behaviour, theft and violence is having in Colchester.

In response, we are increasing high-visibility patrols during peak times, focusing on the busiest locations and working closely with local authorities, wardens and CCTV to provide a coordinated response.

We are also speaking directly with people in the city centre to understand concerns, improve reporting and gather information.

We are working closely with retailers and partners through regular engagement and problem-solving meetings, focusing on targeting repeat offenders and improving the quality of evidence to support enforcement.

Alongside this, we are working with partners to tackle repeat problem locations and ensure long-term solutions are in place.

Through regular “You said, we did” updates, we are showing how feedback is shaping the way we police Colchester and demonstrating the action we are taking and the results achieved.

    Actioned 02 July 2026

  • Priority:

Concerns about vehicle related crime in identified hotspot locations across the district, including residential areas within New Town and Christ Church and Greenstead.

    Issued 02 July 2026

    Action taken:

We understand the concern vehicle crime causes and have been listening to issues raised by our communities.

To address this, we are carrying out targeted patrols in hotspot locations using both uniformed and plain-clothed officers, focusing on identifying and disrupting offenders, including those linked to repeat and organised crime.

We are also working with residents, businesses and parking providers to offer prevention advice, encourage reporting and build intelligence.

Regular updates through “You said / we did” demonstrate the action we are taking and the results achieved.

    Actioned 02 July 2026

  • Priority:

Concerns about serious violence and drug-related harm in neighbourhoods within the district. This includes Castle Ward linked to the night-time economy and late-night venues.

    Issued 02 July 2026

    Action taken:

We recognise the harm caused by serious violence and drug-related activity and are taking action to protect our communities.

We are delivering proactive operations, including targeted disruption days and enforcement activity aimed at identifying and dealing with offenders.

Warrants are carried out where appropriate, alongside partnership work to safeguard vulnerable people.

We are also working with local communities, including young people, to better understand issues, build trust and encourage information sharing, alongside addressing the root causes of harm.

    Actioned 02 July 2026

  • Priority:

Ensure the safety of women and girls in public spaces and the night-time economy, particularly within city centre high-footfall and key transport locations including taxi ranks, bus stops and rail stations used during evening and night-time periods.

    Issued 02 July 2026

    Action taken:

We are committed to improving safety for women and girls across Colchester and understand the importance of feeling safe in public spaces.

We are increasing patrols in key locations, particularly during the night-time economy, and using early intervention tactics to identify and address concerning behaviour.

We are working closely with venues, transport providers and partners.

We are also speaking directly with women, girls and staff to understand concerns, encourage reporting and provide reassurance, supported by clear public messaging and engagement activity.

    Actioned 02 July 2026

  • Priority:

Protecting individuals from domestic abuse and repeat victimisation in vulnerable communities where repeat harm has been identified.

    Issued 02 July 2026

    Action taken:

Protecting vulnerable people is a priority, and we are focused on reducing the harm caused by domestic abuse.

We are prioritising support for high-risk and repeat victims, ensuring regular contact and access to specialist services.

At the same time, we are targeting repeat offenders and working closely with partner agencies.

We are also encouraging reporting and using victim feedback to improve the support we provide.

    Actioned 02 July 2026

  • Priority:

Concerns about burglary and protecting homes across urban, suburban and rural communities where vulnerability and repeat victimisation have been identified.

    Issued 02 July 2026

    Action taken:

We know the impact burglary has on victims and communities and are taking action to prevent offences and catch those responsible.

We are targeting offenders and increasing patrols in hotspot and rural areas, particularly at key times.

We are also working closely with residents to provide prevention advice and encourage reporting.

Our approach includes gathering intelligence, maintaining strong investigations and keeping communities informed through regular updates.
