Martin's connection to West Mercia is very strong having been born and bred in Shropshire, where he still lives. Educated at Adams Grammar School in Newport and an active member within Shropshire Young Farmers; he previously served with West Mercia Police as a PC working within Shropshire and Telford at stations in Whitchurch, Market Drayton, Malinsgate and Wellington, before transferring to Staffordshire in 1996 where he was promoted to Sergeant.
Martin has 27 years policing experience, having worked at all ranks up to and including Chief Superintendent in both uniform and as a detective. During this time, he held roles as Staffordshire's Head of Anti-Corruption Unit, Director of Intelligence, Head of Serious and Organised Crime, Head of Crime and latterly was responsible for Local Policing across the alliance.
Between 2012 and 2014, Martin was Head of the Central Motorway Police Group working for West Mercia Police as part of the three force collaboration, whilst also working very closely alongside Warwickshire Police. Whilst performing this role, Martin took on a national role under the ACPO Roads Policing portfolio, chairing the National Roads Policing Intelligence Forum and an international role as the UK representative on the TISPOL (European Roads Policing) Roads Policing working Group.
Martin joined West Mercia Police and Warwickshire Police in May 2017 as Assistant Chief Constable for Local Policing across the alliance. From 1st September 2017, Martin became Assistant Chief Constable for West Mercia, covering the counties of Hereford, Worcestershire, Telford & Wrekin and Shropshire. He also holds the NPCC portfolio for Collision Investigation.
