Police workforce diversity in Metropolitan Police Service

Details of how the ethnicity and gender of police officers, police staff, police community support officers (PCSOs) and special constables in Metropolitan Police Service compares with that of the population of the force area they serve.

Population data (based on the whole population) from the 2011 census and ONS mid year population estimates, 2016.

Police workforce diversity data from Police Workforce, England and Wales, 31 March 2017.

Police workforce data is based on self-declared ethnicity data. Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) data charts exclude those who did not state their ethnicity.

The number of officers and staff are presented on a full time equivalent basis (e.g. someone working 1 day per week is counted as 0.2), rounded to the nearest whole number. Figures for special constables are shown on a headcount basis, as they do not have contracted working hours.

Percentages for police officers, police staff and PCSOs are calculated using unrounded FTE numbers, to ensure consistency with those published in “Police Workforce, England and Wales, 31 March 2017”. Unrounded numbers of FTE workers can also be found in that publication.
