Gary Thompson joined Gloucestershire Constabulary in 1987 and has completed all of his police service here in the County.

Initially posted to Cheltenham and then Cirencester, he was promoted in 1992 to sergeant responsible for duties at the Royal Household Protection Group. Following that, there were spells in both the custody unit at Gloucester and then leading the pro-active support group at the time of Operation Gemini.

He was promoted to Inspector in 1997 and given responsibility for the Barton Street police station. Following this, in 2002, he was promoted to Detective Chief Inspector at Cheltenham where he was Senior Investigating Officer for numerous complex investigations, including leading five murder incident room inquiries.

Gary was promoted to superintendent in 2006 and carried out a number of roles including leading the criminal justice department and then divisional commander for Gloucester.

Promotion to Chief Supt followed in 2012, where he led both the Force Control Room, Stroud & Cotswold Division and then completed delivery of a new operating model for the Force.

During his career, Gary has attained an MSc in Computing, Diploma & Certificates in Management Studies as well as being a trained coach & mentor. He is a fellow of the chartered management institute.

In his spare time, Gary enjoys flying unmanned aerial vehicles and is qualified CAA operator.
